I just read over at The PETA Files that the small nation of San Marino has become the first independent state to ban the practice of animal experimentation. The citizen-supported bill was introduced in February of this year and was recently signed into law.
This is great! Sure, San Marino may be a small nation with little-to-no international influence, but they are a prime example of what can be accomplished when compassionate citizens take action. Although the media has paid no attention to this story, I predict that one day San Marino will be remembered and honored as the nation that first banned the morally corrupt and scientifically bankrupt practice of animal testing.
All that is left to say is thanks, San Marino, you’ve given hope to the world.

Hi. I’m teaching an English course writing essays. One topic is animal testing. Would it be possible to use your image of the monkey to introduce the topic. Many of our students come from countries that have no awareness of animal rights. It would help to educate them. I look forward to hearing from you.

mary – to be honest, I’m not sure where I got that photo, but I always try to use photos that are released on a creative commons license. so if its for a class, i’m sure it would be ok to use it.

Although it is sad that animals are being tested on it is Necessary for us to learn more about new medications that could harm people the most important thing is that people are safe and you might think i hate animals but i don’t i have just relized that it is necessary for these tests to occure and i support the tests that are helping man kind.

you’re all dumb – I almost didn’t approve your comment because I am assuming based upon the “name” and fake email address you provided that you aren’t actually interested in discussion so much as righteous flaming. However, your comment is a common one, so I thought I would let it stand and allow others to respond.
As for the necessity of animal testing, I am not a scientist, so I’ll defer to those that know better than I. I suggest reading info from the Physician Committee for Responsible Medicine. As far back as 1997 they were proving that cell test were far more accurate than animal tests. This is why we are seeing a shift to stem cell research. The physiology of a rat is not the same as a human. PCRM showed that of 19 chemicals known to cause cancer in humans, only 7 caused cancer in standard animal tests. So 12 of those chemicals would have passed the standard safety test on animals and then gone on to cause cancer in humans. Does that make you feel safe?
Also, what about the large animal testing industry that tests cosmetic products, cleaning supplies, and other unnecessary items? What about the psychological experiments? There are a lot of things we could test, but we don’t because ethics tells us it is wrong (it is why most of us oppose experimentation on people with disabilities, for example). Why not expand that ethical standard to include all sentient beings? Because we are too lazy or cheap or stuck in our ways to use or find better, more ethical alternatives?
